Even though it just became officially Fall, we all know that winter will be here before we know it! You can take preventative measures to help reduce damage if a severe storm hits. Here are a few tips to help you prepare for a storm and some things to keep in mind as the weather begins to get colder.
- Clear limbs and trim trees - during a storm, dead tree limbs can get loose and cause damage to a home’s exterior or break a window
- Secure fences - ensure that fences are properly secured to help prevent them from being lifted up and thrown against the house by heavy winds
- Secure furniture - heavy winds can cause items like patio furniture and large toys to damage the exterior of your home. You should also move anything in your yard that can become flying debris inside your house or garage
- Prepare your home to keep out the cold with insulation, caulking, and weather stripping
- Never use a generator, camp stove, or charcoal grill indoors as these can start fires, cause electric shock, and/or cause carbon monoxide poisoning
- Know your area's risk for winter storms
- Monitor local news and alerts for emergency information and instructions
